Top US cheaters in CQ WW.
Hi, since your last interview I have some questions from our readers. One of them - why there are no any disqualifications (DQs) of US operators in CQ WW?
Question (Q): Since there are no any DQs of US operators in CQ WW it looks like all of them are out of any violations of the rules or cheating. What is your opinion on this topic?
Answer (A): You are right. In last 20+ years just few US operators were DQed in CQ WW. All of them were DQed not for violations of the rules or cheating but for late logs or some minor mistakes in the log. But this doesn't show there are no any cheating among US operators.
Q: What kind of cheating in CQ WW is most popular in US?
A: One of the most popular cheating is so called "fake multiplier". But this kind of cheating is more popular among US operators outside continental US, who operated in Caribbean area or from other DX location.
Q: How this cheating looks like?
A: Since some time there are no any other participants from your own country in the contest you have problem to get your own country for multiplier. Many operators are using fake multipliers to cover this lack.
Q: How it works?
A: It is easy. You can add to the log just some local guys or even your wife's DX callsign.

Let see what we have. First, J37LR is J3-callsign of VE3EBN, one of the J3A team. In this contest J3A needed "J3" multiplier since there are no any other J3 stations available in this contest. What we see in this log - in the middle of the day, around 11 AM local time J3A moved to dead 160 mtrs band, find J37LR for multiplier and moved him to other bands. J37LR did not call someone else in the contest and used this call sign just to provide multiplier to his team. J37LR is typical fake multiplier. J37LR was added to log after contest.
Q: Good example. Interesting, why referees didn't point attention how J37LR appeared in the log at midday time on 160m band. But VE3EBN is Canadian.
A: You are right, but actually, J3A is US team.

Who is VP2EW? VP2EW, home call is N5HGB. She is a wife of KC5EA. KC5EA is one of VP2E team. N5HGB did not operate CW ever, she is SSB only operator. But did not operate even in SSB CQ WW ever. This is fake multiplier. It was added after the contest.

In this case VP5JM is a host of station where VP5W operated. Hi did not operate in the contest since his station was busy by VP5W team, but he is in VP5W's log as well. This is fake multiplier. VP5JM did not call somebody else in this contest. VP5JM multipliers were added to log after contest or VP5JM was inside shack and made eyeball contacts. Such contacts are prohibited by the rules and should lead to DQ.
Q: O, yeah. I don't see VP5JM in other logs. Really fake one.

V44KAI is local HAM who usually helps to V47NT (op. N2NT) to set up station. He is a friend of N2NT. It's OK. We couldn't prohibit to friend to call you it the contest. But what we see? At late night, around 2 AM V47NT suddenly left 40 mtrs EU 2-3 QSO/m pile up and moved to dead 10 mtrs band where find V44KAI multiplier.
Q: Unbelievable...
A: One question to you.
Q: What?
A: Do you now how to move rare DX to other band for multiplier?
Q: Sure. I'll ask DX to QSY to other band. If he says OK, I tell him freq to move. He says OK and move. On new band I'll call him. He will answer. That's it. Then proceed to next band if needed.
A: How long time you need to move DX to 3 other bands?
Q: I think, 3-4 minutes.
A: Top CW operator could do this in 2-3 minutes, only if top cw operator is also on other side. But it is not available in 1 minute like V47NT did.
In my point of view this is a fake multiplier added after contest end.
By the way, V47NT was #1 NA and #2 world in CQ WW CW 2009. Only this five fake multipliers add him around 100K points and helped to move from 3-d place world to second.

Q: Who is 8P9KG?
A: I did try to contact Amateur Radio Society of Barbados to ask who 8P9KG's licensee is. They did not say name of licensee but not officially they told me that licensee is YL. Since I don't know name I just can suggest she is wife of W2SC or some other relative. Anyway 8P9KG did not call somebody else, did not CQ in any CQ WW or other contest and even did not operate outside contest. This is fake call sign which organized to supply multipliers for 8P5A. But you didn't allow me to show what we see in such issues.
Q: Go ahead.
A: Okay. Let's see for last one. What we have - 8P5A had rest time for meal or so between 15:30 and 16:03. He didn't operate that time so far. After contest he decided to add 8P9KG multiplier to log. But where? Exactly, at rest time.
Q: A agree with you, this is best way. But I don't see 8P9KG before 2012. Did he use this call sign before?
A: Nope. 8P9KG was issued in 2011 or 2012. Check for other callsign used for this purpose before.

A: I don't know. I hope he is a local guy. Anyway you will not find this call in other logs so it is fake multiplier as well.
Q: I wonder why contest director and CC allow such huge cheating of these operators?
A: I don't know about all such issues but I can say about last one. Randy, K5ZD as contest director was reported about 8P5A's issues in some contests. But no acts were done.
Q: Why?
A: Who knows. May be because W2SC (8P5A) was team mate of K5ZD (former CQ WW Contest director) at WRTC team or so. Actually, how you can imagine to DQ your team mate just before WRTC?
Q: I see about former contest director. But will new contest director and CC check for this issues or at least stop such cheating in future?
A: Noup. They are not interesting to DQ US operators or friends. It is enough to DQ some guys outside US to show strict refereeing to public. We saw many DQs just for two spots originated by operator's friend or so.
By the way, next time when we'll talk about other contests, CQ WPX for example, we'll see same cheating and same persons. W2SC (8P5A) is padding log with fake multipliers in this contest as well. Every year, including 2014, 2015, 2016 when he was world winner in SO entry. Take a look:

Nobody around the world did get 8P9 multiplier except 8P5A.
Q: True cheating. What other cheatings are popular in US?
A: Second popular kind of cheating is using of cluster or RBN assistance in SO non-assisted category. Actually such cheating is popular everywhere in the world but allowed by referee team only for US operators.
Q: I heard about. Usually almost all DQs are related with this violation.
A: Sure. According to our statistic based on 2014-2015 CQ WW logs analyzing we found that 39% of EU operators and 23% of US operators are using clusters or RBN assistance in SO non-assisted category. You are right. There are lot of DQ's on this issues last years around the world but not in US.

In this case 14181 is run frequency. E7DX is fresh cluster spot originated by NQ4I at 11.05 UTC. NN3W click E7DX spot on band map to quick move to 14284 to pick up E7DX multiplier and return back to run frequency to continue with CQ.

VY2TT was on 28116 with great 3 QSO'm CQ rate. Please note,6V7V just started on 28048 at 16.29 UTC, so VY2TT was very quick with RBN spot to catch him... Same minute 6V7V appeared in cluster. Just picked up new one VY2TT was returned back to 28116 to proceed with huge pile up.
You will be DQ'd immediately for such activity if you will try to do this.

In this case KP3Z did run on 21103. At 14.55 UTC he was called by MU0FAL. He spent one minute to move MU0FAL to 14 MHz for new multiplier and returned back to run. Same minute he saw OA4SS multiplier on band map on third band. He clicked it on band map and moved there to pick up new one. OA4SS is cluster spot originated by GM3YOR at 14.49 UTC.
Q: May be KP3Z was operated in Assisted category and was allowed to use cluster?
A: Nope. He was in non-assisted category.

So, K1DG at CQ rate of 3 QSOs/m managed to check 60 kHz on other band in 4 minutes and got 3 multipliers which were spotted in cluster just few minutes before.
Actually, please try to find and pick new multiplier between 28595 and 28623 in one minute with 4 QSO rate on 20 mtrs band...
Also please note that such Caribbean stations don't say own callsign after every contact and some time you need to wait few minutes to get DX callsign.

So, K1DG checked fresh spots in cluster to collect multipliers which were spotted just few minutes before. In 7 minutes he had 7 new multipliers in range of 83 kHz on overcrowded 40 mtrsband, from different directions.

A: One more cluster assisted cheater who can control even 3 bands in one minute.

K5ZD did hide exact frequency after contest. Actual frequency of TO7A was 21254, XR6T - 21313. TO7A was spotted in cluster at 19.55 UTC, XR6T at 20.06 UTC. So, both multipliers are fresh spots from cluster and were picked up by clicking on band map which connected to cluster. Other way you need to check 70 kHz in 2 minutes to find these multipliers while keep pile up on run frequency. Such behavior was reason for DQ of hundreds contestmen. Many of them were DQed by K5ZD as Contest Director. You can see such activity other years as well.

Q: I saw many DQed logs but didn't see such huge violations across all contest. What is your opinion on all this issues?
A: Take it easy. Contest is just fun. Just try to increase your previous result or compete with your local guy. Please be sure all top scores will be shared between other guys where possible.
Q: Which guys?
A: Those who close to contest director and all his team. Typical example - CQ WW CW 2014 Contest. 1-st place world SO Assisted category - K5ZD (CQ WW Contest director). 1-st place world SO Non-Assisted category - N2NT (CQ WW 160m Contest director). So both first world places were shared between CQ WW contest directors. Actually, I don't know other HAM radio contests around the world or other kind of competitions where competitor and referee is same person. Could you imagine Olympic games where athlete and referee is same person?
Q: No examples so far.
A: On my opinion, contest director or referees should submit they logs as "check log".
As you can see I did not use any software to show you this violations. Everybody including referees can easy find them and many other in published logs. I have huge list of violations in CQ WW based on software analyzing but it will take more time to talk about. Violations are verious. If you are interesting we will talk on this topic later.
